National scene: Traffic accidents declining, KNKT says

Sat, December 29 2012 | 10:36 am

JAKARTA: The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) has recorded a decline in the rate of accidents in the past six years.

Committee chairman Tatang Kurniadi said his office had investigated as many as 256 cases related to traffic accidents from 2007 to 2012.

“From 2007 to 2012, the KNKT has investigated 256 traffic accidents,” he told a press conference here on Friday.

He said that out of these 256 cases, 41 cases are related to accidents on highways, 44 cases related to railway incidents, 31 cases were at sea and 140 cases were plane crashes, Antara news agency reported.

“According to investigations carried out by the Indonesian authorities, several components of the uninterruptible power supply [UPS] had caught fire,” Tatang said responding to the power outage that delayed flights at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Dec. 16.
