Greater Jakarta: Cab driver
held for rape attempt

DEPOK: Taksiku cab driver Deny Syamsudi was arrested late on Thursday over an allegation of attempted rape and captivity of a band vocalist, he was at a hideout in Tangerang.

Depok Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Achmad Kartiko said the police had received a report from Anis Muaffaq, the vocalist from Be Violence, on Dec. 24.

She said she hailed the taxi from ITC Depok on Jl. Margonda Raya and the taxi driver drove her through the Cinere-Jagorawi toll road to Citeureup in Bogor.

“The victim was bound and the taxi driver telephoned his friend to join him. The suspect said he asked for Rp 1 billion (US$103,573) for her release,” Achmad said on Friday.

In Citeureup, Anis managed to escape the taxi even though her hands were bound, she was helped by an Indonesia Military (TNI) personnel who later took her to the police. Taksiku communication manager for Central Jakarta, Iman Junaidi, said that the suspect was a new hire and had been dismissed from another taxi company. He had also worked as public minivan driver.

“We take this incident as a lesson learned to be more careful in recruiting drivers,” he said on Friday.

According to Achmad, the suspect told police that at first he only intended to rob the victim but after suspecting the passenger could be from a wealth family he changed his mind.

If found guilty, the suspect could be punished with up to nine years imprisonment for robbery with violence.
